The GR8 Journey
Nobody was holding me to a deadline. I still didn't start.
Nobody was holding me to a deadline.
That's the part I can't get around. No client waiting on proofs. No date somebody else had circled on a calendar. And making new designs and new concepts for GR8nessforme didn't cost me anything. Just time, and a computer I was already sitting in front of.
I still didn't start.
The relaunch of my apparel brand lived in my head for so long it had its own corner, rent-free. Every time it came up, I had a sentence ready. I'll start when things slow down. I'll start when this project wraps. I'll start when…
And then I'd fill in the blank. With anything. There was always something, and it always worked, for about a day.
Here's what I need to be honest about: I don't know what I was waiting for.
I've tried to work it out. Was it a fear of winning? A fear of not succeeding? Was it the commitment, the part where something stops being an idea you get to carry around and starts being a thing you have to see through? I've turned all three over and I can't pick one. It might be all of them. It might be something I haven't named yet.
What I do know is the question that's been following me around ever since:
nobody was holding the deadline but meWhy was I waiting on a reason to be great?
Nobody was going to hand me one. There was nobody to hand it.
So here's how it actually went. There was no big moment. No sign, no speech, no perfect day to begin. I had been chatting with other entrepreneurs and watching other creators out in their own spaces, doing their thing. And somewhere in there, after putting it off for sooooo long, I sat down at my computer and decided that today was the day.
The question I asked myself was a little direct. Why aren't you walking in your greatness?
It's here. It's in you. You've done this before and you can do it again.
I won't pretend that made the first step easy. The first step is always the hardest part for me. I get so overwhelmed by the bigger picture that I can't even see where step one is. The whole thing looks like a wall.
So what I'm learning to do is smaller than a pep talk. I take a breath. I take a beat. I go sit with my plants. And then I work it backwards from the big picture until I land on step one, something small enough to start today. Then I begin.
That's it. That's the whole method. Welp.
I started. That's where I am: started. And it turns out starting didn't require the feeling I'd been waiting on. I never got that feeling. I got a decision and a very small first step.
Sound familiar?
I'd bet money you've got a sentence of your own. I'll start when… Maybe it's a business, a book, a conversation, a version of your life you keep describing in the future tense. Maybe, like me, nobody is even stopping you. No deadline, no price tag. Just a quiet reason you keep slipping in front of it.
So here's my real question, and I'd actually like an answer: what's yours? And do you need a reason to create the greatness you want for your life? Because I looked for mine for a long time. I'm not convinced it exists.
Every day is a conscious effort to choose greatness. Today's effort can be tiny. It still counts.
You are dope. Now it's time to start acting like it.
And remember — it's not just the greatness for me, it's the greatness for you too!
